Formerly known as Rocky Road Vineyard, Hazel’s Vineyard was purchased in 1998. The vines are planted on 40 hectares of north facing slopes on ironstone gravels on a tributary of the Upper Chapman Brook. After being farmed biodynamically for 12 years, McHenry Hohnen received formal certification in July 2020.
Burnside was purchased in 1976. Eleven hectares have been planted on a number of aspects, as dictated by the contours of the rivers bend. It has proven to be an exceptional site.
McHenry Hohnen's vineyards are managed using 100% biodynamic methods which are designed to improve the vitality and health of the soil. Over time, methods and preparations create deeper topsoil, increase root mass and depth, increase carbon capture and water holding capacity of soils - thereby improving plant health and dramatically improving the plant's resistance to pests and disease. The wines produced by McHenry Hohnen reflect Margaret River's strong suit of Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties. There is a focus on alternative varieties which perform very well in the region's Mediterranean climate including Zinfandel, Roussanne, Marsanne, Mataro and Grenache.
Winemaking is handled by Jacopo Dalli Cani. Jacopo’s philosophy for winemaking closely aligns with McHenry Hohnen’s methodology of natural winemaking and minimal intervention, following organic and biodynamic principles.
