The vineyard lies on the south side of the Calgardup Brook which is a westerly flowing stream just south of Witchcliffe. With a gentle northerly aspect and the westerly influence this is a very good vineyard. Vineyard management takes a back to basics approach at McHenry Hohnen embracing sustainable 'Old School' practices that were used before the rise of intense agriculture. | |

Tasting note |
A soft nose shows hints of kaffir leaf and mandarin peel next to fresh sweet brioche. Lime is preserved with a hint of ocean spray and sea salt whilst subtle use of oak gives sweet entry into a mid-palate that is lemon butter on a slate cutting board. All is wound together to a tightly structured finish that truly reflects the minerality of the Calgardup Brook site.

Sarah Ahmed, www.thewinedetective.co.uk, 19 Sep 2012Hohnen confided that, as a young man, he’d been sceptical about the importance of place (terroir), but “had learned a lot better.” McHenry Hohnen make three single vineyard Chardonnays. Calgardup Brook is from the cooler site and this wine is consistently excellent (check out my notes on a vertical here) and very much in tune with Australia’s new modern, earlier picked style. Though textural (wild yeast and lees), it has terrific line, the finish long, grapefruity and mineral. Very precise. Going through its shows a lovely intensity of lemon and juicy white peach fruit; oak is seamlessly integrated. Not a jot of heaviness. Will age very well. 94 points, James Halliday, January 2012Mid-gold; a highly expressive and complex wine with grapefruit, grilled cashews and candle wax on display; the palate is medium weighted with zesty acidity providing a long and even ride from start to finish; fine grilled nut flavours linger tantalisingly. Neil Cammies, Western Mail, 20th July 2013".... has a light touch on the nose with a white floral bouquet with a touch of orange citrus fruit. The use of oak is delicate and restrained as not to block those brisk citrus fruit hints. Through the mid palate is a very defined mineral hit showing the regionality and the most western tip of the area with its coastal proximity within touching distance of the Indian ocean also weighs in with a little salty structure. This is a very versatile wine that cries out for a fresh seafood salad." Ned Halley, Western Daily Press, 20th July 2013"...it is one of the finest renderings of the chardonnay grape I can remember tasting in a long time. It has an extravagant straw-gold colour, and the most enticing perfume of keen, mineral-pure classic chardonnay fruit with the slightest suggestion of butterscotch in the background. Sniff a little more, and you'll find cool, freshly peeled ripe nectarine in the scent, complete with the tangy twist of tartness that's to be found in this luscious fruit's skin. The flavour of the wine corresponds faithfully. It is rich but thrillingly refreshing, ripe, peachy and lingering but keen and crisp with a limey edge. It's perfect... It's as inspiring as grand white burgundies costing twice as much, and it presents incontrovertible evidence that some Aussie winemakers are still very much on top of their game." Andy Cronshaw, Manchester Evening News, Heywood Advertiser, Macclesfield Express, Rossendale Free Press, Rochdale Observer, Middleton & North Manchester Guardian, Stockport Express, 27th July to 2nd August 2013, Your wine...McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Brook Chardonnay 2011 has a soft, lime nose, a little butter on its complex palate with a mineral seam and a very elegant tight structure. Brian Elliott, Scotland on Sunday, 15th December 2013From its toasty nose, through its complex and structured orange and tangerine fruit to its rich, buttery, vanilla finish, this is exactly what classy Margaret River chardonnay should be. |
