Cristian Urzua, Viu Manent’s export manager, is a frequent visitor to the UK and on a recent visit we asked him a few questions about his favourite drinks, local foods and of course, Viu Manent.
Of the Viu Manent wines his favourite without a doubt is the Single Vineyard, San Carlos Malbec (vineyard pictured). One of most amazing features of Viu Manent is the old Malbec wines that are unique in the region. The San Carlos vineyard is one of the oldest in Chile, it was established in the mid-19th century with pre-phylloxera stock brought from France. The grapes for this wine come from the best parts of the vineyard, blocks 5 and 6.
San Carlos Malbec goes so well with the top rump served at Rayuela Restaurant on the estate. But for something special to start, try the oysters with Secret Sauvignon Blanc. The restaurant has a pool with ocean water to keep the oysters fresh as they are about 70km from the sea; roughly a two and half hour drive. Top tip – the smaller they are the tastier. In the last year the biggest development on the estate has been the investment in the restaurant. It has just reopened with an amazing glass terrace and is also now open on Friday and Saturday nights.
When out with friends and not drinking wine, Cristian’s drink of choice is Pisco, beer or sparkling, depending on the occasion. On holidays though, sangria or aperol spritz are a top choice. Most holidays in Chile are to the coast or if they go abroad they go to Mexico or Brazil.
If you visit Viu Manent, not only is the restaurant an essential but they can also offer tours in a horse-drawn carriage on horseback and they offer electric bicycles or horseback riding. Also available is Pilar Rodriquez’ Food and Wine Studio where you can learn how to choose ingredients inspired by wine or the seasons all the while surrounded by vineyards. Her cooking is exclusively committed to Chilean produce and reflects the origins and culture surrounding each ingredient.
