We are delighted to annouce that Wakefield is the World's Most Awarded Winery.
The World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists (WAWWJ) has released its global ranking of the world’s most awarded wineries and named family-owned Wakefield Wines as the most awarded winery in the world for 2017 in a ranking of more than 50,000 producers. Founded in 1996, the WAWWJ consists of 13,500 wine journalists, bloggers and judges representing 80 different countries across the globe. The prestigious industry body combines the results of the most recognised international wine shows to rank the world’s most successful wineries.
Today Wakefield is headed up by Mitchell Taylor whose philosophy blends an ‘old world’ estate mind set with ‘new world’ winemaking innovation; coupled with an almost fanatical attention to detail and obsession with quality. This results in wines of tremendous quality and style that are made with respect for the company’s family heritage. The Wakefield estate now covers 750 hectares from which a range of distinctive wines to suit every occasion is crafted.
Wakefield is a third generation family wine business and was founded in 1969 by Bill Taylor who was inspired by his love for the red wines of Bordeaux’s Medoc region. He was drawn to South Australia’s Clare Valley where his first vineyard was planted on the banks of the Wakefield River close to the village of Auburn. In 1973 Bill Taylor tentatively entered his inaugural Cabernet Sauvignon vintage in Royal Adelaide Wine Show and was delighted to win the prestigious Montgomery Trophy for best red wine in show. Since then Wakefield wines have gone on to win more than 2000 medals and awards in major international wine competitions.
