Viu 1 2021 Harvest Report

20 November 2023

The weather

The 2021 vintage was cool, without extreme temperature peaks, which included a very unusual rainstorm at the end of January, which delayed the planned irrigations during harvest season (March – April).

After this unusual rain, there were 10 to 15 days of low temperatures that delayed the ripening of the grapes. This was an important factor in addition to the conditions that presented during harvest time, which resulted in grapes of extraordinary balance and higher natural acidity compared to previous years.

These weather conditions, allowed the vintage 2021 to produce very silky tannins with greater extraction. Besides from the abundant character and expression, the wine also presents great depth ensuring tremendous potential for aging.

The origin

In contrast to precedent years, where the majority of the grapes come from Viu Manent´s centennial Block N°4 (clay soil), vintage 2021 added grapes coming from a parcel with slit soil. This addition imparts greater freshness and elegance to the wine, shifting the focus from concentration and structure.

The winemaking

This is the fourth consecutive vintage following the advice of Viu Manent consultant winemaker Paul Hobbs, well-known world Malbec expert, which has helped significantly to improve the vineyard management practices to obtain higher quality from the vines.

This unique vintage is the first one that the Malbec percentage has gone below 85% giving space for larger percentage to an outstanding quality of Cabernet Sauvignon.

What a pure and floral nose with plenty of violets, black cherries, potpourri and spices. Hints of mussels, thyme and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is juicy and broad with compact but silky, melted tannins. A big improvement from the past with more floral, varietal characters of malbec. 83% malbec, 17% cabernet sauvignon.
