Julian Grounds, Head Winemaker at McHenry Hohnen has sent over an update for the 2018 vintage.
"Vintage 2018 in Margaret River is shaping up as one of the most classical in recent memory. Whilst spring and early summer was warm and dry, there were no significant heat spikes, with the maximum temperature hovering between 25-28C most days (rare for the area).
This coupled with cooler than average nights, has resulted in amazing fruit purity and acid profiles in the Chardonnay. Here in the south, it's some of the most phenomenal Chardonnay fruit we have seen, an abundance of flavour at low sugar levels.
Temperatures have begun to warm early in March, seeing accelerated ripening in red grapes. However, acid and tannin ripeness are already at incredible levels.
For us, Syrah and Grenache already show dynamic flavour profiles, and Cabernet and co are looking as good as any year. The whole region has an air of excitment about this vintage."
