Monday 6th August saw the McHenry Hohnen team launch the new vintage 2011 of their flagship wine Rolling Stone at Rockpool in Perth.
Following international acclaim for their 2010 Rolling Stone (Top 50 Wines of the Year, Decanter Magazine) David Hohnen and Murray McHenry, along with their chief winemaker Trent and viticulturist Mike, have re-imagined the Rolling Stone and created a wine that takes in only the very best parcels from their Rocky Road vineyard, reducing volumes to just a third of that made in previous vintages.
The wine comes from the clay and ironstone pebbly soils that are prevalent in the Southern Margaret River, where long sunny days are moderated by cool ocean breezes from the Southern Ocean. The McHenry Hohnen vineyards are grown sustainably following biodynamic practices, which result in bioactive soils where the vines can thrive and reveal their true character. The 2011 Rolling Stone was hand crafted from start to finish beginning with pre-ferment cold soak in stone open fermenters. The wines were then hand plunged for gentle extraction and underwent an extended maceration for soft and savoury tannins. All the components were matured in the finest French oak barriques, most of which are two and three years old. The wines were then held in oak for 18 months prior to bottling. The wine remains unfined and unfiltered.
The 2011 Rolling Stone is a blend of 50% Cabernet, 25% Malbec and 25% Petit Verdot.
The Australian Journalist Ray Jordan published a glowing review:
‘The bar has been raised with this release. The best barrels of the best parcels of a dramatically reduced harvest have been chosen to produce a wine of extraordinary style and quality. Half cabernet sauvignon with equal components of malbec and petit verdot. A beautiful mix of sweet fruit with a touch of chocolate. Tannins are silky and finely integrated and the oak worked perfectly to create an exquisite statement of Margaret River. 98/100. Ray Jordan, Sunday Review, 3 August 2014
We will be bringing this wine to the UK later this Autumn but if you have any questions or would like to discuss a reservation please contact your Louis Latour sales person.
