Julian Grounds, Head Winemaker at McHenry Hohnen has released two new wines, one white and one red.
The first is Laterite Hills Chardonnay 2017. This wine is a blend of the three vineyards owned by McHenry Hohnen; Calgardup Brook, Burnside and Hazel’s Vineyards. Laterite soils are the common feature of all.
Julian explains “Lateritic soils are some of the oldest soils on the planet. They are free draining, red-orange and harsh; there is something inherently Australian about them. They encourage the vine roots to explore deep to find water and nutrients and be self-sufficient. ... For me this wine is a reflection of both our house farming style and winemaking style.”
The nose is dominated by kaffir lime leaf and grapefruit that leap from the glass, accompanied by a light ginger note. Mouth filling white peach and lemon rind give way to a roasted almond mid palate. The acidity is creamy but balanced.
The second new release is BDX 2016. Incidentally all the grapes for this wine are from Hazel’s Vineyard and so it is a single vineyard. BDX was the nickname in the winery given to Rolling Stone but while Rolling Stone is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.
“Rich and powerful, like that of this site. With Malbec dominant blends an uncommon phenomenon in Australia. This is a chance to showcase the purity and power of the variety.” says Julian Grounds.
These wines have just arrived in the UK and will be available to taste at Imbibe Live on 2nd-3rd July 2018.
