Recently Gosset have released two limited edition wines, one from 100% Pinot Noir and the second from 100% Pinot Meunier.
Grand Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut NV
To date, this is the first and only time Gosset have made a Blanc de Noirs. It was initially a trial but when the wine was tasted around three years ago, it was decided they would release it as a limited edition cuvee.
The base wine comes from Grand and Premier Crus: Ambonnay, Aÿ, Verzy (Grand Crus) Chigny les Roses, Tauxières, Avenay (Premier Cru). They used a special technique of ageing Pinot Noir on Chardonnay lees which they have been doing for over 12 years. This technique is used on a proportion of all their Pinot Noirs but was used on the entirety for this cuvee. This technique brings freshness, dynamism and more delicacy to the wines. The wine was aged for 9 years on lees before release and has a dosage of 5g/l.
Only 10,000 bottles were made and Gosset have now sold out. There is no more Blanc de Noirs in the cellars so it will be at least 5 or 6 years before any more is released, if they decide to make another.
This cuvée exhibits a nose of white fruit, hints of patisserie, along with a touch of white peach and baked apple. The palate is supple and balanced revealing notes of honey, beeswax and citrus, followed by a fresh, lively finish.
Grand Blanc de Meunier Extra Brut NV
Once again, this limited edition release is the first of its kind from Gosset. The base wine for this cuvee comes mainly from the 2007 vintage with a little 2006 reserve wine. The grapes came from specially selected mid-slope, south and east-facing sites in premier cru vineyards around Epernay, where the shallow, chalky soils offer a mineral and saline quality to the wine. These sites cannot be called premier cru when growing Pinot Meunier but can for the other two, more prominent varieties in Champagne.
This cuvée was created to highlight the ageing potential of Pinot Meunier and is a tribute to the most widely planted grape in Champagne. With 10 years ageing in the bottle in their cellars, this cuvee certainly proves Meunier can produce fantastic champagnes that can be aged. As with the Grand Blanc de Noirs, the Meunier was aged on Chardonnay lees to bring freshness to the wine.
This cuvée exhibits a nose of summer fruits such as Mirabelle plum, apricot and quince. A full-bodied palate revealing the generous characteristic of Pinot Meunier with an intense vivacity and freshness that cleanses the palate.
Only 5,000 bottles of this cuvee were made and as above, Gosset have sold out.
