First Release of Louis Latour's pioneering Pierres Dorées Pinot Noir

16 November 2016

Louis Latour has released a completely new wine: Les Pièrres Dorées Pinot Noir 2015. This is an exciting project which has seen Latour recognise the potential for the Pinot Noir vines in a region that has traditionally been planted with Gamay.

Located 40 kilometres north-west of Lyon, the Pierres Dorées lies on undulating hillsides amongst 39 villages. The area’s name comes from the golden ochre coloured stone that is visible throughout the landscape which is formed from crinoidal limestone (marine fossils from the starfish family) and tinted by iron oxide which gives it the ochre colour.

Maison Louis Latour first began to explore the Pierres Dorées region in 2010, they soon discovered its potential, including a small old vineyard that had been planted in the 1970s, and began to purchase land, recuperate existing vines and plant young vines in 2012. Today it has 25 hectares across two parcels, one in the village of Morancé and the other in Theizé.

The vineyards are located on gently sloping hills and benefit from good sun exposure. They are located between 280-380 metres above sea level and benefit from a continental climate which ensures that the grapes ripen slowly and retain good acidity levels. The Pierres Dorée clay and limestone soils are very similar to those found in Burgundy. They are composed of a crinodial limestone, marl from the Early Jurassic period and a clay-limestone mix. This very specific terroir allows the Pinot Noir to reveal all its elegance and richness. The vineyards are managed following the sustainable practices adopted in all of Louis Latour’s vineyards and are handpicked.

A limited quantity of this wine has been allocated to the UK and will be arriving this November. It will retail at around £15 per bottle and is bright and intense red colour with red-garnet lights with aromas of wild flowers, red berries and soft spices. On the palate it is crunchy, round and ample with great freshness underlined by concentrated black fruit flavours with a superb length.
