Cognac Frapin announce the launch of Frapin Millésime 1989, a 30 year old Cognac born in a year of favourable weather conditions and a bountiful summer to produce this wonderful vintage.
Millésime 1989 is a rare cognac, that required no blending, only the intuition and skill of the cellar master, Patrice Piveteau, who used a combination of artisanal techniques, such as double distillation on the lees. For the first time, Frapin aged the 1989 vintage cognac in the humid cellars, downstairs where the humidity comes from the soil and more alcohol than water is lost, giving rise to a softer and more rounded cognac with a lot of flavour. All previous Frapin vintage cognacs have been aged in the dry cellars, upstairs.
30 years old is a very long ageing period, and during this time the wax-sealed casks of 1989 were monitored by the BNIC (the authorities in Cognac) to guarantee authenticity and the origin of the vintage. Millésime 1989 was made solely from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in crumbly chalk and clay soils located on the western side of Frapin’s vineyard in the heart of Grande Champagne region, the ‘premier cru’ of cognac when it comes to the quality of the fruit.
Cognac Frapin have one of the largest properties in the area with 240 hectares planted with vines and they control every process from growing the grapes to the bottling. Embodying all the elements of a very fine Cognac, Millésime 1989 joins the Trésors du Chateau collection of rare Frapin vintages.
The Cellar Master’s tasting notes: A delicate background of light woody notes with fruit aromas of orange, ripe apricot, gingerbread. On the palate, it is fine, elegant and rich with some orange and liquorice, but also gingerbread and on the finish, a beautiful long aftertaste with cigar box and rancio. A beautiful harmony acquired from 30 years of ageing.
“The first vintage aged in our humid cellars. A new pleasure to discover.”
Patrice Piveteau, Cellar Master
