To win once, it is heroic, twice, Herculean, but three times, almost God like, and that is exactly what Scott Smith did. Three times a winner in the most prestigious of the Champagne Gosset Award at the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Awards.
To win this three times is unheard of, as it is judged blind, with the judges unaware of the identity of the entrants until the awards ceremony itself. It is an astonishing achievement.
The task was to design a set of contemporary caviar spoons with matching rests, being aware that the bowl of the spoon could not be made from metal because it can damage the flavour of the delicate sturgeon eggs. The design had to be functional with the spoon made of a non-metal material so as not to affect the caviar’s flavour. The ornamental adornment and accompanying rest had to incorporate the Gosset logo.
Smith, who was delighted and honoured said 'Champagne Gosset is resolutely contemporary, whilst never losing sight of its heritage. Its approach to producing its champagnes mixes traditional, artisanal techniques with the cutting edge and bespoke.'
Scott commented, “The standard of competition was really high so I am really honoured to have won again. I am so proud to have this achievement so early on in my career. It’s so exciting. It’s brilliant that Champagne Gosset is nurturing design and creativity with their support for these awards”
International Business Director for Champagne Gosset, Bertrand Verduzier said, “Scott has consistently showed an appreciation of Gosset’s heritage, style and values. His designs speak to the spirit of the champagnes we produce, mixing tradition and modernity. It’s extraordinary that he should be chosen as the outright winner of the award three times!”
A Gold award was also given to Luke Orford for his spoon design inspired by the Shovel-Nose Sturgeon. Silver awards were awarded to Theo Kimber-Salanson and David Stonehouse (the awards first ever winner). Bronze awards were given to Julie Nicaisse and Carly Wilson for their designs.
Congratulations Scott Smith!
