The 2019 vintage marks 20 years of Viu Manent’s flagship wine Viu 1. Its first release from the 1999 vintage was a homage to founder Don Miguel Viu Manent, from who the Colchagua Valley winery takes its name.
It is a limited edition, 100-year-old-vine Malbec, from block 4 of the 19th Century San Carlos Vineyard, one of the oldest vineyard properties found in the Colchagua valley. This wine is the dream and vision of the founding father, and his journey to achieve something truly special and great, representing everything that family and wine are to him.
José Miguel Viu Bottini pays tribute to his father through this wine, creating a world-class wine, and contributing to the winery’s legacy. ‘Seeing our name circulating among the best and most recognized wines in the world. He was able to lend wise advice to his project, but unfortunately passed away before his dream was realized’, said José Miguel Viu.
The wine, produced by head winemaker Patricio Celedon, presents a violet and cherry colour which is perfumed, complex and fresh on the nose, with floral notes such as violet, red and blue berries, and subtle aromas of orange peel, together with sweet spices and graphite. On the palate it has great structure but being soft and elegant at the same time. It shows itself alive with lots of energy and freshness, alongside a great length and superb aging potential. It is matured in oak barrels and oak foudres for 16 months before being released.
On the 25th of November 2021, Viu Manent celebrated the milestone of 20 years in style, in Santiago, Chile, at the beautiful Casa Pocuro, the former site of the Russian commercial attaché. Wine industry experts and journalists were invited to taste a vertical tasting of 5 vintages ranging from 1999 to 2019, showcasing the special occasion. The 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 have been voted 'The Best Malbec in Chile' by Patricio Tapia of the Descorchados wine guide.
The 2019 VIU 1 will be available from mid-February 2022
