The Brunello Crossing takes place each February and coincides with the release of the new Brunello wine vintage. It is a festival of trail running and hiking that allows participants to explore the region on foot and learn more about its wines.
Through our partnership with Castello Banfi, who are one of the event’s sponsors, we were lucky to have the opportunity to attend with a group of customers and journalists this February. The majority of the group took part in the hike, which follows a trail that winds through the vineyards and hillsides to the north of Montalcino. The weather was warm and sunny, and showed the landscape off at its best. The walk stopped at several wineries who were on-hand to offer tasting samples of their Rosso di Montalcino paired with a local dish. It was an extremely pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning.
Special recognition goes to writer Chris Losh who completed one of the competitive trail runs, he put the rest of us to shame running what is a very hilly and challenging course.
The Banfi team pulled out all the stops and organised a selection of activities to introduce people to the area. These included a cooking class with Banfi’s head chef Domenico Francone, a walking tour to learn about the rich history of the town with an art historian and an in-depth visit with head agronomist Gianni Savelli and winemaker Gabriele Pazzaglia.
