Viu 1 is a tribute to Viu Manent's founder and is made with the best grapes of Block 4 on the San Carlos vineyard near Cunaco in the Colchagua Valley. The vines in this block are approximately 90 years old. The 2008 vintage is the 8th release of this wine. It was quite an atypical season as a cold spring delayed bud break by 3 weeks but a long warm summer followed with stable temperature levels until late March. These conditions allowed the grape tannins to continue ripening without a large rise in sugar levels. | |

Intense onyx-purple color with an elegant nose that reveals notes of blackberries, cherries, and plums that intermingle with subtle notes of red tobacco, violets, and spices. The exuberant palate stands out for its freshness, elegance, and concentration of velvety tannins with traces of blackberries, blueberries, and sweet spices that complete its complexity and lead the way to along and unforgettable finish.

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast (USA), Editors Choice, July 2011“Deep, earthy and minerally, with tight black fruit aromas, clarity, focus and palpable quality pouring off the bouquet. The palate is layered and pure, with acidic kick, fine tannins and proper weight. With attractive flavors [sic] of dark berries, vanilla and a multitude of spices, this remains the benchmark for Chilean Malbec.” 90 Points, Wine Spectator, October 2011'Toasty and rich, but nicely integrated, with the roasted vanilla bean edge melding into the core of blackberry, fig paste and blueberry sauce notes. The fleshy finish lets a tobacco edge linger.' James Molesworth 90 points, Wine Spectator (USA)31st March 2012 16.75 (89) Points, Decanter, Anthony Rose, April 2014'Old-vine Malbec is a Viu Manent speciality. Viu 1, from a single block with an average age of 90 years, is a powerful red with no shortage of oak, albeit stylish French oak, coating the opulent black-fruit-hearted richness of the wine, whose ample flesh sits on a spine of firm tannins and good acidity.' 91 points, Neal Martin, December 2012'...It offers a rich, toasty nose of blackberry, iodine and blueberry that unfurls in the glass. The palate is full-bodied with dense ripe tannins, layers of tobacco infused black fruit and just a trace of Asian spice towards the backward, chocolate-coated finish.' www.eRobertParker.com |
