Maison Louis Latour 2021 Vintage Report

14 February 2023

Tim Atkin’s Burgundy Report for the 2021 vintage, written by Christy Canterbury MW

The 2021 vintage was challenging for Louis Latour, as Domaine Director Christophe Déola said ‘The vintage caused us so much suffering that it is hard to like the wines. Still, we are very satisfied with those we made. So, how can 2021 be this bad or – at least – this contradictory?’

‘Across the two colours, they got 20% of a harvest in 2021 and missing 2 harvests between the last three years.’ Furthermore, prices have increased rapidly, with a barrel of Bourgogne Rouge from Aloxe fetching now €2,000, when previously it was about €1,200 in 2017

Some highlights for Louis Latour mentioned below:

Louis Latour, Domaine Latour 2021 Corton Grand Cru 95 Points

This is an assemblage of Corton terroirs: Grèves, Perrières, Clos du Roi, Bressandes and Chaumes. Save the last, which looks southeast, these face due east. This youthful, dark wine exudes an earthy minerality and pairs this overarching character with intense layers of plums, cherries and blackberries. There is tangy verve to rein in the dense fruit core and nicely finessed tannins, too.

Louis Latour 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Clos Poirier 94 Points

This is a half hectare of vines that sits just under Le Montrachet and unusually is planted in north-south rows. It starts with a honeyed nuance and expands into spicy, unctuous tarte tatin layers of flavor. The fervent acidity firms up the back palate and leaves a light saline note on the finish. Less exotic than usual but still in the rounder, lusher style typical of Latour's interpretation of this vineyard.
