Hawkes Bay is the oldest wine region in New Zealand and with a maritime climate, like Bordeaux, it is dominated by red wine production including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Over millennia, four major rivers in the area moved to form valleys and terraces. There are over 25 different soil types and altitude ranges from sea level to several hundred meters high. This creates a rich and diverse region where many grape varieties can flourish and produce extraordinary wines.
